Ever since 1936, the Municipal Art Collections (Collezioni Comunali d’Arte) have been set up in the former winter apartment of the Cardinal Legates in Palazzo d’Accursio in Piazza Maggiore.
In addition to paintings dating back from the Middle Ages to the present day, the extensive collection also includes art objects, pieces of furniture, porcelain, fabrics, lace, embroidery, miniatures and important wooden crucifixes. The collections, in fact, make up a “furnished museum” with halls maintaining the original decorations where furniture is the protagonist intact.
The Urban Hall, dating back to 1630 and restored in 2013-14, is particularly prestigious. It is one of the most important examples of Baroque in Bologna and the heraldic decorations covering its walls, made up of 188 coats of arms and three figurative scenes, have also give it its name Sala degli Stemmi (Coat of Arms Hall)
